Fenix has a long and storied history that traces its origins back to 1947, when Russell E. Phelon founded the R. E. Phelon Company, Inc. in Springfield, Massachusetts. What began as a small manufacturing operation soon grew, and by 1951, the company moved its operations to East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. For nearly four decades, this facility served as the heart of Phelon’s manufacturing, producing a wide range of innovative products for the engine electronics and fuel delivery markets.
In 1979, under the leadership of Russell D. Phelon, affectionately known as “Dale” and the son of the company’s founder, the company underwent significant changes. Corporate headquarters were moved to Aiken, South Carolina, and the manufacturing facility was expanded to 150,000 square feet to accommodate a growing customer base in the Southeast. This move also included the development of a sister facility in Lomira, Wisconsin, to serve the Midwest’s engine electronics and ignition needs. The expansion of the company cemented its reputation as a leader in ignition systems for small engines.
In 1987, R. E. Phelon Company (D.R.) S.A. Caribbean Operations was established, marking the company's entry into international manufacturing. This custom manufacturing facility developed and produced ignition systems for outdoor power equipment, serving industries ranging from garden tractors and lawn mowers to weed trimmers and chainsaws. The Caribbean operation became a cornerstone of Phelon's success, driving innovation and expanding the company’s reach in the small gasoline engine market.
In a significant transition, R. E. Phelon was sold to former CEO David Mosier, and the corporate identity was rebranded as Fenix Manufacturing Solutions. This new identity marked a new era for the company, with a focus on diversifying its offerings and expanding its footprint across various manufacturing industries. Today, Fenix is known for its innovation, adaptability, and global competitiveness, continuing the legacy of excellence established by the Phelon family while driving forward into new frontiers of manufacturing.
Fenix’s evolution from its roots in ignition systems to a globally competitive manufacturing company showcases its resilience and forward-thinking leadership. The company’s transformation represents more than just a name change—it embodies a commitment to innovation, diversification, and growth in an ever-changing marketplace. Fenix remains dedicated to meeting the challenges of modern manufacturing, leveraging decades of expertise while embracing new technologies and industries, ensuring its continued success for years to come.
